In the novel Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, the main character, Lyra has a daemon, Pantalaimon. Lyra affectionately calls him Pan and he is the embodiment of her soul, her closest companion and protector. Pan is a shape-shifter, taking on the form of various animals from a moth to a pine marten.Shamans believe that we each have a power animal, a creature that protects us from illness and negative energy, like a guardian angel. The animal will lend us his wisdom and we may take on the attributes of that animal. Shamans believe that we could not survive childhood without several power animals and it is important that we honour our animal so we can connect on a deep level and show appreciation of his assistance.
I have often dreamed about lions and seen a vision of a lion during Reiki sessions. I'm calmed by his masterful appearance, his warm, golden mane and his beautiful soulful eyes. I like to think, as I'm strolling dark streets at night or facing a particularly stressful day, that my lion is with me, prowling ahead of me to ensure the path is safe, looking back occasionally with a protective nod.
Have you ever felt the presence of an animal? Repeated signs that an animal may be trying to communicate by drawing your attention to related items or words? You can ask a shamanic practitioner to help you discover your power animal, or you can simply ask out loud for the animal to show itself to you in a vision or dream. This is a reassuring way to know that you are not alone in the world, you have a 'guardian angel' in some way, shape or form and he is with you when you need him.
